What is Value Added Tax (VAT)?
Value-added tax is a tax levied on the value added generated at each stage of goods and services transactions. The general VAT rate in Korea is 101 TP3T.
VAT calculation formula
VAT = Supply Price × 10%
Included Price = Supply Price × 1.1
Reverse calculation: Supply price = Included price ÷ 1.1 · VAT = Included price ÷ 11
Included Price = Supply Price × 1.1
Reverse calculation: Supply price = Included price ÷ 1.1 · VAT = Included price ÷ 11
Simplified taxpayers (annual sales of less than 80 million KRW) have a lower tax burden by applying the industry-specific VAT rate × 101 TP3T. Tax-exempt businesses are exempt from VAT.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the VAT of 10% calculated?
Supply price 1,000,000 KRW × 10% = VAT 100,000 KRW, Total 1,100,000 KRW. Inverse calculation of included price: 1,100,000 KRW ÷ 1.1 = 1,000,000 KRW (Supply price), VAT = 100,000 KRW.
What is the difference between tax exemption and zero-rate tax?
For tax-exempt items, no VAT is applied, so a tax invoice is not issued. Although the zero-rate is based on the 0% tax rate, there is a tax payment obligation, so a tax invoice is issued and the input tax is refunded.
